DESCRIPTION: ISFOC is participating in the SUNRISE PV project, whose main objective is to optimise the production of renewable energy (in this case, from photovoltaic sources) with a very significant reduction in the energy and economic cost of the technology (improvement of LCOE), as well as to significantly advance the efficiency, flexibility and manageability of PV plants within a framework of environmental, economic and social sustainability.

The project focuses the research on:

  • New materials and manufacturing processes to optimise production through increased efficiency and reduced investment costs.
  • New operation and maintenance processes to maximise the energy production of PV plants, extending their useful life, offering a more durable, efficient and reliable use of solar PV, making it more competitive.
  • New processes for the recovery and reuse of critical materials and components to increase their value. Research into new processes for the recycling of PV module components and procedures for the valorisation of PV modules at the end of their useful life.

In parallel, work will be done to promote the scalability and mass deployment of the innovative solutions developed in the project through:

  • Development of new circular business models to make PV systems as economically profitable as possible.
  • Implementation of methodologies to evaluate and minimise the impact of PV plant installations in the territory where they are located, from their design, through construction, to the end of their useful life.

The SUNRISE PV project is part of the 2022 call for grants for the "Science and Innovation Missions Programme," from the State Programme to Catalyse Innovation and Business Leadership of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2021-2023, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. These grants are managed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, through the Centre for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI). The main objective of these grants is to support relevant research projects that propose solutions to cross-cutting and strategic challenges for Spanish society, improve the knowledge and technology base on which Spanish companies rely to compete, and stimulate public-private cooperation.

The SUNRISE PV project is funded by CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development).
